Neil Peart was the drummer for Rush. He was also a writer and a thinker.
One of his most quoted lines is this:
"If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."
I like it because it's true. And because it removes an excuse.
Most people think that not deciding is a way of avoiding responsibility. It isn't. Not deciding IS a decision. You've chosen to let things stay as they are. You've chosen to let someone else steer.
That's still a choice. It just doesn't feel like one.
Here's what changes when you see it that way. If you're always choosing, then you're always in control. Even when it doesn't feel like it. Even when the options aren't great.
Choosing puts you in the driver's seat. It shifts you from passenger to pilot.
There's one more thing worth saying.
Make sure the choice is actually yours.
A lot of what we think we've decided has already been decided for us. By habit. By what other people expect. By what we've always done.
Before you commit to something, take a few seconds. Ask yourself: is this what I actually want, or is it just what's easiest right now?
That pause is the difference between a real choice and a default.
Take the pause. The Magic Pause. Make the choice and then own it.
This Week's Motivator
You are always choosing. There is no neutral.
The question is whether you're choosing deliberately or by default.
Take the pause. Own the decision.
Prompt for the Week
Where in your life are you "not deciding" - and what is that choice actually costing you?
Pick one thing this week. Make a deliberate call on it. Even if it's small.
