The Four Factors

Your thoughts affect your feelings, and your feelings influence your behaviour. The Four Factors are a practical way to notice that process and choose your response.

You cannot avoid every event in your life. You can become more deliberate about what you believe, what you put into your mind, the mental position you take and where you place your attention.

01

Belief

What do you expect for yourself?

Belief shapes your self-image, your expectations and what you consider possible. It is the story underneath the choices you make.

02

Programming the Mind

What are you repeatedly telling yourself?

The words, ideas and habits you repeat become familiar pathways. Deliberate inputs help you replace unhelpful patterns with useful ones.

03

Mental Posture

What will you accept or reject mentally?

Mental posture is how you choose to meet events you cannot control. It includes perspective, resilience and the response you practise.

Focus

Where are you directing your attention?

What you concentrate on grows in importance and influences your next action. Focus turns priorities into consistent progress.

Read Light Your Own Fire

The Four Factors grew from the practical performance psychology work I developed with Charles Donoghue. Our book, Light Your Own Fire: How to Find Purpose in Your Life, explores many of the same foundations—including purpose, mental posture, focus, courage and belief.
