The Next Move · with Glenn Edley

You want more sales. Where are they getting stuck?

Yes, every consultant talks about more sales. The useful question is why the sales you could be making aren't happening.

You may already have a good idea, but need the people around you to see it too. Or you want a fresh pair of eyes on the customer journey before you commit to another campaign, hire or system. I ask the questions, find the likely bottleneck with you, and help you put one worthwhile move to the test.

Tell me what's happening

For owners and business leaders ready to make a commercial decision and act on it.

Does this sound familiar?

Enquiries come in, but the follow-up is patchy. People click, then disappear. Good customers rarely hear from you again. You suspect something needs to change, but another campaign or tool may only send more people into the same gap.

Or you can see the move already: a better sales conversation, a clearer offer, more referrals, or a reason for customers to return. Your team hasn't agreed on it, or the daily work keeps pushing it aside.

Bring me the result you want and your view of what's in the way. We'll test that view against what customers actually experience and decide where to act first.

Nothing happens without a sale

My dad told me that when I was young. It has guided my work ever since. Sales don't begin when somebody talks to a salesperson. They begin when a customer becomes aware of you and continue through every interaction that earns a return visit or a recommendation.

I call the way I examine that whole path the Customer First Framework. We follow the customer, look for the point where momentum breaks, and decide what is worth changing first. Sometimes the answer is in the message or website. Sometimes it is in a form, a handoff, a conversation, a missed follow-up, or customers you already have.

Build buyers, not lists.

Find the bottleneck. Make the move. See what happens.

  1. Start with the goal. What would need to be different in 12 months for this to have been a success? Tell me what you believe is stopping it. I review the relevant numbers, messages, website, enquiries, sales process and customer communication to see where momentum breaks.
  2. Choose the first move together. We work online, bringing in the people whose agreement or action matters. I share what I see, challenge the assumptions where needed, and help you decide on one move, who owns it and what would show it is working. The aim is to put a first action to the test within five working days.
  3. Do it. See what happens. Adjust. Your team puts the move into practice. I stay involved for an agreed period to review the response, identify what is still blocking progress and decide whether to continue, adjust or stop. The scope depends on the move and who needs to be involved.

For example: if people click an email but don't enquire, we might inspect the page, the form and what happens after it. We might call people who already showed interest. The first move follows the evidence in your business.

How we work together

My part: ask the questions, examine the relevant customer and sales journey, bring commercial judgment, help the right people reach a decision, and review what happens when the move is tested.

Your part: make the change, or give someone in your business the authority and capacity to do it. If hands-on implementation needs other people, we agree on that separately.

We define the move, responsibilities and follow-through before starting. At the end we decide whether to keep going, change direction or stop.

What this looks like in real businesses

For more than 20 years, I've worked on the connections between customer communication, marketing, sales and the systems that carry an enquiry through to a purchase. I start with the business objective and look for the gap between interest and action.

At Noel Leeming, we explored how a receipt could start an ongoing customer relationship. This working whiteboard maps e-receipts, onboarding and what happens after a purchase. The idea was part of the work that developed into My Noel Leeming and ongoing customer communication.

At Aeroqual, contact forms needed to become a reliable way to handle enquiries. The work connected forms with Zoho and later Salesforce and set up follow-up communications, helping the sales process keep moving after someone made contact.

In work with a big box retailer, email's share of website traffic grew from 0.6% to 8%. That was the result of a business and its team working over time, not a forecast for a new engagement.

Your product may be entirely different. I need enough access to understand how customers discover it, decide, buy and return, and someone inside the business who can make a change.

The Next Move

We focus on a commercial result you want, find the likely point where sales are being lost, and get one change into action. You get an independent view that your team can work from, a clear owner for the move, and a way to see what happened.

  • A review of the relevant customer and sales journey before we decide
  • A focused online working session, with the right people involved where needed
  • One agreed move, its owner and a practical way to test it quickly
  • Follow-through to review the response and decide what to do next

This is paid, scoped work. After an initial conversation, I'll recommend what to tackle, how we'll work together and the fee. You'll know what I'm doing, what your team will do and what we'll watch before you decide.

Tell me what you're trying to change

What result do you want for the business, and what do you think is getting in the way? Give me the short version. I read every enquiry myself and will reply about whether a conversation would be useful. If I can help, I'll propose the work and the fee before we start.
